Car Key Stuck in the Ignition? Causes and Safe Fixes

A key that will not turn, or will not come back out, is usually a symptom of something simple. Force is what turns a £90 job into a £400 one, because a snapped key inside the barrel means extraction plus, often, a replacement barrel and a new key.

The key will not turn

Work through these in order before applying any force.

**Steering lock engaged.** By far the most common cause. The steering column locks against the last direction the wheel was turned, trapping the key. Grip the wheel and rock it gently left and right while turning the key with light, steady pressure. It will usually free instantly.

**Gear selector not fully in Park.** On an automatic, the ignition will not turn unless P is properly engaged. Move the lever into Neutral and back into Park firmly, then retry.

**Flat car battery.** On many vehicles the electronic steering lock and ignition need power to release. If the dashboard is dead or dim, the battery is the first suspect.

**Worn key or worn barrel.** A key worn smooth over years no longer lifts the wafers correctly. If the spare key turns and the everyday key does not, the key is worn, not the barrel.

The key will not come out

**Not fully in the Off position.** The key only releases at Off or Accessory-Off. Turn it fully anticlockwise and try again.

**Automatic not in Park.** Same interlock as above, in reverse.

**Failed key-release solenoid.** On many automatics a small solenoid holds the key until Park is confirmed. When it fails, the key is trapped even though everything looks correct — this needs a technician.

**Debris in the barrel.** Pocket lint, sand and old lubricant build up over the years. Never use WD-40 or any oil-based spray in a lock barrel; it attracts more dirt and gums the wafers. Graphite powder or a dedicated PTFE lock lubricant is the correct product.

What not to do

Do not use pliers or a mole grip on the key head. Do not hammer the key. Do not spray oil into the barrel. Each of these regularly turns a straightforward call-out into a full barrel replacement.

When to call

If the key is snapped, the barrel spins freely without engaging, or the dashboard lights up but nothing turns, it is a job for an auto locksmith.
