Ford 'Key Not Detected' — What It Means and How To Fix It
Few warnings annoy Ford owners more than the dashboard's persistent "Key Not Detected" message. It's especially common on Kuga, Puma and Mondeo smart-key models. Here are the four causes we see most often.
1. Flat fob battery
By a wide margin the most common cause. Replace the CR2032 battery in the key and the message usually disappears.
2. Worn antenna ring
The antenna around the start button can wear out, especially on older Kugas. A replacement antenna ring usually resolves the issue.
3. Damaged transponder chip
If the key has been dropped, soaked or otherwise damaged, the transponder chip inside may have failed. A new key is then needed.
4. ECU pairing lost
After a flat car battery or a jump-start, the key pairing can occasionally be lost. A simple re-pair on dealer-grade kit usually restores function.
