Audi Key Programming Explained (2026)
Audi keys are programmed via one of two main platforms in 2026: MQB for smaller models like A1 and A3, and BCM2 for larger models like A4, A6, A7, A8 and the Q-series. Both platforms require dealer-level diagnostic equipment, which mobile auto locksmiths carry as standard.
What programming actually does
Programming pairs the transponder chip inside the key to the immobiliser ECU of your specific car. Without this pairing, the key may turn the ignition but the engine will refuse to crank.
How long does it take?
Audi programming typically takes 30–60 minutes on-site. The technician plugs directly into your OBD port, authenticates with the ECU, writes the new key data and confirms.
What does it cost?
Audi key programming fitted on-site costs £200–£350 in 2026, depending on the platform and the type of key (basic remote vs smart key).
