How Long Does Car Key Replacement Take?
When you are stranded, the honest answer to "how long?" matters more than the price. Here are realistic timings from actual jobs across West London and the Thames Valley, split into the two parts that make up your total wait: getting to you, and the work itself.
Getting to you
Our average arrival across the core coverage area is 30–45 minutes. Inside Slough, Hounslow, Uxbridge and central Reading it is frequently 20–30 minutes. Heathrow terminals and car parks add time for access and barriers. Motorway hard shoulders are handled as a priority but must be coordinated with the recovery services, since we cannot legally work on a live hard shoulder.
Spare key for an existing working key
20–40 minutes. The blade is copied from your original and the transponder added through the vehicle's own learn procedure. This is the fastest and cheapest job we do, which is exactly why getting a spare before you need one is worth doing.
Broken key extraction
15–45 minutes for the extraction itself. If the snapped key was your only one, add the time for cutting a fresh blade — usually another 20–30 minutes.
Lost key, all keys lost
45–90 minutes on site. The blade must be derived rather than copied, the security PIN read from the ECU, the new transponder paired and the old keys deleted. Several manufacturers enforce a timed security delay of 10 to 60 minutes during programming; that is a designed anti-theft feature and cannot be bypassed by anyone, dealer included.
Emergency unlocking, keys locked inside
10–25 minutes in most cases, using non-destructive air-wedge and long-reach tools. No damage, no broken glass.
Ignition barrel repair or replacement
60–120 minutes depending on how much dashboard trim has to come off to reach the barrel. Older Fords and Vauxhalls are quick; some premium German models take longer.
What makes a job slower
Premium smart keys with manufacturer security gateways, vehicles less than a year old, cars with previously changed locks that no longer match the VIN key code, and anything parked in an underground car park with no mobile signal for online programming.
