Spare key or all keys lost?

You still have a working Mini key

A spare or replacement key can usually be added with the working key present. This is the quickest and cheapest route — worth doing before the last key goes.

Spare car keys

Every Mini key is lost

The security data has to be read from the car before a new key can be made, and the lost keys are removed so they can no longer start it. It takes longer and costs more.

Mini key not detected or won't start?

  1. Fit a fresh battery in the key and try again.
  2. Try your spare key. If the spare works, the first key is the likely fault.
  3. Use the backup start position in your owner's manual, if your Mini has one.
  4. If no key is recognised, the fault may be in the car's immobiliser or keyless system — we diagnose it with the car's fault codes before replacing anything.

Check your exact Mini first

Security systems change between models and model years, and a small number of vehicles can only be done by the dealer. Before we book, send us:

  • Your registration and approximate year
  • Whether any key still works
  • A photo of the key, if you have one
  • What the dashboard shows, if there is a warning

We will confirm whether we support your exact model and give a fixed price. Proof of ownership (V5C and photo ID) is checked on arrival.

Mini key questions

Can you make a Mini key if I have lost every key?

On many Mini models, yes — but it depends on the exact model, year and security system. Send the registration first and we will confirm whether it can be done at your location or whether a dealer is the only route, before you book.

Is a spare Mini key cheaper than replacing a lost one?

Usually, yes. With a working key the new key can be added to the car more simply. When every key is lost the security data has to be read from the car first, which takes longer and costs more.

My Mini says key not detected — do I need a new key?

Not always. Try a fresh key battery and your spare key first. If the spare works, the original key is likely at fault; if no key is detected, the fault may be in the car and needs a diagnostic check.

What do I need to have ready?

Your registration, the approximate year, whether any key still works, a photo of the key if you have one, and proof of ownership (V5C logbook and photo ID).
